Pelargonium sidoides
Pelargonium sidoides
Pelargonium is an African Geranium with the traditional name "Umckaloabo" in Zulu this translates to "severe cough"
It is one of my favourite herbal heroes when it comes to children’s health, especially for upper respiratory tract infections.
I know we can feel so powerless when up against colds and flus as a Mum, especially when coughs seem to drag on and on.
When the only options given from mainstream practitioners are antibiotics (which won’t make a dint in a viral infection) or Panadol… it can feel like there’s not much else we can do. But as a Naturopath I have a whole toolkit full of different herbs and nutritives that helps us out of these funks.
Evidence suggests that Pelargonium activates an immune response and prevents virus replication, inhibiting adhesion of bacterias to respiratory cells. It may help to clear mucous from the respiratory system and ease the length and severity of coughs, colds and flus.
Primary actions include: antiviral, immunomodulator, mycolytic (anti-moulds), Antibacterial & Antimicrobial.
Indicated for bronchitis, common colds and influenza, pharyngitis, sinusitis and tonsillitis.
You can source this herb in the form of the product "Kaloba" by Blackmore's at most pharmacies.
If you want to see what else we can do to tailor a treatment plan to your families symptoms as well as strengthen the immune system to prevent on going illness then please book an initial or an acute consult.
I can also prescribed this liquid herb from my dispensary if you cannot source this locally to you.
